Success in Unheralded Accomplishments

We may not always know the impact we have on our students or athletes during the most trying of teaching and coaching times.  As I reflect on my teaching and coaching career, many of my greatest accomplishments were during my most challenging years and seasons.  No, the outcomes and records were not so amazing, but success in those difficult times were measured in different ways.

In these COVID times, do not mistake low or unusual results in academics and athletics as a reflection of poor teaching or coaching.  I assure you that your students and athletes grew this past year, but in ways that may not be noticeable on paper.  Your students and athletes will be stronger because you stuck with them through adversity.

As we move forward into this next school year, your COVID teaching and coaching experiences will be noticeable in your students and athletes. They will be more resilient and resourceful. They will be more determined and thorough. They will be more accommodating and appreciative. These accomplishments may go unheralded, but you will recognize these positive characteristics in your students.

As we transition into post-COVID times, I encourage you to share your experiences at this year’s annual SCAHPERD Conference, November 12-14 in Myrtle Beach.  Get reconnected to your professional organization and the networking it provides.  SCAHPERD leadership recognizes all that you have done for your students, and we want to celebrate you!  “From Fear to Fun in 2021!”  See you soon!
