News from SCAHPERD President
As my year as SCAHPERD president begins, I would like to encourage all of our members to reach out to a colleague in health, physical education or dance, and encourage them to join our fine group of educators and professionals. Please know that there are some exciting things to come this year, and the board of directors and committee chairs participated in a leadership conference at Columbia College in late January to get the ball rolling as we set some ambitious goals and began the work to accomplish much this year.
The strategic planning committee has been working to revise and update our current plan that will affect most aspects of SCAHPERD in a positive way. This process is hard work and we have many qualified folks working on this committee who have strategic planning experience at the corporate and higher education level. I believe this will greatly improve SCAHPERD as a whole.
My personal goals this year are to start the process of securing corporate sponsors, building membership, specifically reaching former members, and lastly, by increasing the number of people who attend the annual SCAHPERD conference in November.
I am in the process of composing a letter that will serve as an introduction of SCAHPERD to corporations who align with our mission. This letter will be used to begin a conversation, which we hope will culminate in developing new corporate partnerships and sponsorships . The goal is for us to work together to further our mission to promote healthy, active lifestyles in South Carolina.
Secondly, there is a large group of health, physical education and dance teachers out there who are not SCAHPERD members, but have been in the past. We have a great deal to offer all educators. We plan to offer different professional development opportunities like a strength and conditioning workshop, in hopes to reach some of our educators who are coaches. We also need to promote the general liability insurance policy that is provided as a SCAHPERD member benefit. This policy covers all job related activities, including coaching and after school programs.
Lastly, growing the number of educators attending the annual conference requires quality presenters, consistent promotion through social media and emails blasts, and communication of the benefits of attendance such as recertification hours, new and innovative ideas, professional networking and a re-energizing of one’s passion for our profession. Our conference planning committee is hard at work putting together an exceptional program. Our PR committee is working on providing eye catching and engaging social media posts. Now we are asking you to do your part. Make a commitment to be at the 2020 conference. Next, make a commitment to recruit a colleague to come with you. It will be an experience neither of you will regret!
Here’s to a great year!
Mike
