Dr. Mel A. Tomlinson
Dr. Mel A. Tomlinson is a native of Raleigh, N.C. He earned both his high school diploma (1972) and his B.F.A. (1974) at the University of the N.C. School of the Arts in Winston- Salem, N.C. In 2000 he received his Masters and Doctorate degrees in Christian Psychology from the University of Theology in Stanley, N.C. On January 20, 2001 he was called into the ministry at St. Paul Baptist Church in Charlotte, N.C. Tomlinson is certified in CPR, phlebotomy, Pilates, piano and is an interpreter in ASL,(American Sign Language.)
Tomlinson has traveled the world over performing before Presidents, Crown Heads of State, (Kings and Queens). He was a lead dancer in the following companies: Agnes de Milles's Heritage Dance Theatre, Dance Theatre of Harlem, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre, New York City Ballet, Boston Ballet, and N.C. Dance Theatre., (making him the only dancer to have danced in six renowned companies.) He has worked with such luminaries as: George Balanchine, Ruth Page, William Dollar, Sir Frederic Franklin, Danilova, Geoffrey Holder, Arthur Mitchell, Karel Shook, Robert Lindgren, Duncan Noble, Katherine Dunham, Louis Johnson, Peter Martins ,Jerome Robbins, John Tara's, Alvin Ailey, Patricia Wilde, Melissa Hayden, Jill Bahr, Josephine Baker, Ray Charles and Dr. Maya Angelou to name a few.
As a Master teacher/choreographer he has rendered instruction on the faculties of: Harvard University, UNCSA, UNC-Charlotte, Boston Conservatory, Southern Methodist University and Boston Ballet's CITYDANCE. His choreography is based in classical ballet technique and lines with shades of contemporary, jazz, tap, liturgical and folk dance. Presently he is teaching at Steps-N-Motion in Charlotte, N.C. and freelances as a guest teacher/choreographer giving master classes and workshops throughout the world. This is his gift and passion and part of

About South Carolina Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance
The South Carolina Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (SCAHPERD) is the only association for professionals involved in health, physical, and dance education, in South Carolina. Our members are current, retired, or future professionals who work in schools, higher education, community organizations, government and non-government organizations.
SCAHPERD consist of four member associations: 1) the South Carolina Association for Physical Education and Sport (SCAPES); 2) the South Carolina Association for the Advancement of Health Education (SCAAHE); 3) the South Carolina Dance Association (SCDA); and 4) the South Carolina Association of Future Professionals (SCAFP). The associations provide the content focus for members and the Alliance provides support for common needs and services such as professional development, advocacy, and communications.
SCAHPERD is aligned with SHAPE America/ SHAPE America Southern District and other state and national partners to further our mission. The mission of SCAHPERD is "to promote health, physical activity and wellness among the state’s citizens through effective leadership, professional development, education and advocacy."
Membership in SCAHPERD is critical to support professionals working in the fields of health education, physical education, and dance. Your membership supports the work of the South Carolina Association for the Advancement of Health Education, the South Carolina Association for Physical Education and Sport, and the South Carolina Dance Association.
