News from the SCAPES…

Over the spring, SCAPES worked with educators across SC to create professional development opportunities tailored to supporting you as a physical educator. These outstanding webinars included: Planning the Best PE Events and Financial Literacy: Grant Writing, Donors Choose, and Fundraising. These webinars are available On-Demand SCAHPERD Members Only portal! After viewing the videos and completing the short survey you will receive a 1-hour recertification certificate! We also had an exceptional PEAK workshop this year at Indian Land High School. It was a full day filled with 16 different break out sessions and professional networking! See PEAK 2023 pictures at Facebook. Hopefully this will “PEAK” your interest to attend next year’s annual PEAK workshop! A special thank you to Merri Martin, SCAPES President-Elect for planning PEAK and for all our presenters at PEAK and on our webinars! Your expertise is invaluable!

What’s next?  We look forward to continuing our Learn with SCAPES series in the fall! Details forthcoming! We kicked off the season with our annual OPEN workshop at Crayton Middle School on August 3rd.  Another outstanding professional SCAHPERD provides for its members!

SCAPES is thrilled to introduce the BEST Program!

This year, we are excited to pilot a program targeted at supporting beginning physical educators (0-3 years of experience) and junior and senior future professionals. SCAPES' 'Beginning Educators' Support Team' (BEST) Program will partner an experienced physical educator as a mentor with a small cohort of 3-7 novice teachers. The cohorts will meet throughout the school year: a virtual kickoff meeting in September, in person at the SCAHPERD conference in November, in person at the PEAK (Physical Education Activity and Knowledge) workshop in the spring, and four virtual meetings with their cohort scheduled throughout the year. Mentors will be available to provide lesson suggestions, behavior management techniques, assessment strategies, guidance on current best practices including the 2021 SC Physical Education standards and newly released curriculum guide, and general support for the well being of the novice educator. This program is FREE for all active SCAHPERD members. If you are or if you know of a novice physical educator who would benefit from this program, please complete our interest form: https://forms.gle/UFFkDF5gV3kS4nW9A by September 1.

Messages from the SCAPES Board:

This summer has been an adventure! My husband and I are thrilled to announce the arrival of our first son Jackson! We are healthy and doing well.  Summer is the perfect time to recharge and reflect on what matters most.

For SCAPES, YOU matter most. You, SC’s physical educators who are working diligently to ensure every child has access to quality physical education that benefits students’ long term health and wellness. So while the excitement builds for the upcoming school year and you are welcoming your students back for an exciting adventure, our goal is to support YOU!

His presence reminds me of how important our work is to provide all children with opportunities to be their best and truest self.  I am grateful to each of you for the hard work you do and the passion you have for this profession!

I had the opportunity to attend the National Academy for Health and Physical Education (NAHPL) Southern Tier Leadership Development Conference in Baton Rouge, LA. It was a great time of learning and I am looking forward to using and sharing some of the tips I learned in the coming year! Fun time networking, learning and seeing some local sights!

Merri Martin,

SCAPES President Elect

As I reflect on a class I am currently taking this summer, School Law from Liberty University, I want to encourage everyone as we start a new school year to reflect on safety in our schools. Our job as physical educators is to create a safe environment for students to learn and grow. We all know accidents happen in a blink of an eye, but doing everything we can to prevent those accidents are keys to success. I hope you all have a safe and exciting school year!

Amber Hege

Physical Education, Vice President

I had the opportunity to travel around the country and grow as a physical educator.  I presented at and attended multiple conferences, observed other physical education programs and directed a Physical Education Summer Bridge program for at-risk youth in NC. My encouragement to you as a fellow physical educator is to remember: Your Passion Inspires Action!
