SCDA Accomplished a Great Deal this Year
Hi SCDA members! I hope everyone is having a wonderful 2021 (or at least better than 2020) and is ready to get back in the swing of things, after what I think has been the SHORTEST SUMMER EVER!
SCDA has truly accomplished a great deal this year that I am so proud of and want to share with you.
We welcomed new board members this year:
Osagie Ehigie—PeeDee Regional Coordinator
Macy Mikolajczyk—PeeDee Regional Coordinator
Tiffany Moss—Upstate Regional Coordinator
Kayla Jennings—Newsletter Editor
We created an ad hoc committee Dance Team Competitions, who successfully established a SCDA endorsement program in which schools interested in hosting competitions can contact us to endorse their competitions. Special thanks to Jennifer Coffey for chairing this committee and thanks to this committee for all their hard work and all that was accomplished. SCDA plans to continue to offer this opportunity by proposing to establish a permanent DAnce TEam Competitions standing committee (*see motion below).
We also hosted our first annual SCDA State Dance Team Championship this past March which was a great success.
Osagie Ehigie & Macy Mikolajczyk, PeeDee Regional Coordinators, along with Rebecca Lee, president-elect, have been working to create a sponsorship proposal packet that can be used to recruit prospective sponsors for various events we host in order to increase revenue as we provide more opportunities for our members.
Upcoming SCAHPERD Conference—Registration opens soon—Watch your email!
The annual SCAHPERD Conference is November 12-14 at the Embassy Suites in Myrtle Beach. We have a busy weekend planned thanks to Mike Lally (SCAHPERD Past-President), Jennifer Coffey (SCDA Past-President), and the conference planning committee. Here are a few of the sessions we have planned:
Guest Artist Francisco Graciano (former Paul Taylor dancer) teaching technique & choreography workshops on Friday and Saturday
Technique classes in Int/Adv Ballet, Modern Dance, Afro Cuban Jazz, and more
Poetry In Motion-Integrating dance and ELA
The Art of Teaching Majorette
Lunch and Learn-The State of Dance in SC (bring your lunch and have a conversation)
Several more still to be confirmed include Hip Hop and various world dance forms.
The annual SCDA business meeting will be held at the SCAHPERD conference on Saturday, November 13. The following motions will be presented for membership vote at this meeting:
*Establish a new standing committee, Dance Team Competition Committee, to continue to provide opportunities for endorsement for school dance teams throughout the state
Change the title the “Newsletter Editor” to “Communications Coordinator” (remains a non-voting position. In addition to editing the SCDA newsletter, this position would also be responsible for updating the SCDA webpage and social media pages as needed.
