News from SCAPES

I am Marc Camp and I am honored to serve as the 2021 SCAPES President.  For those of you who may not know me, I am an elementary physical education teacher at Limestone-Central Elementary on Cherokee County. I began my teaching career on March 1, 1989.  I have spent all of my years as an elementary physical education teacher.  Many changes have come about during those 32 years, one being that physical education has become one of the main components of the elementary curriculum. No change has been more dramatic than what we have experienced since March of 2020. We have faced many challenges as physical educators in what we are allowed to teach and how we deliver instruction. We have taught virtually, on limited days of the week, in asynchronous situations and literally some have not been able to teach physical education at all but have had to teach another subject. Hopefully, we are  beginning to see the light at the end of the tunnel! While going through this uncertainty, SCAHPERD has provided resources through webinars, re-entry guidelines, a virtual conference…in an effort to support you in whatever situation you find yourself. Please know that SCAPES will continue to do this and to assist you as we navigate this new normal! This spring and summer, your SCAPES leadership plans to offer different webinars, the annual PEAK Workshop and to re-introduce COVID Chats which will hope will begin in the near future. I believe that if we come together and share ideas, it will make life “better”, our jobs easier and make us more effective as teachers as we continue to impact our students.

     WE DO NEED YOUR HELP! I know many of you have a special interests and/or skill sets that we can use as part of the SCAPES leadership. There are multiple committee positions that we need members to fill. These include public relations and social media, membership, professional development, youth sports, adapted physical education and youth sports. If you would like to serve, have questions and/or need more information, please email me @ marc.camp@cherokee1.org or scahperd.scapes@gmail.com. Please consider volunteering as we want to continue to make SCAPES stronger as we serve our members.

     While many changes have come about during my 32 years of teaching and especially in the last 12 months, one thing that remains constant are the students we serve. Become a part of SCAPES and join us as we seek to better serve our students. If you have suggestions or ideas, please share them with us at the emails provided above. Thanks for all you do.
