SCAFP News

Lots of changes have occurred for the Future Professionals this year. We said goodbye to our faculty advisor, Dr. Karie Orendorff, who completed her PhD from the University of South Carolina and accepted a position at Montana State University.  Many thanks to Dr. Orendorff for all she did for SCAFP and we wish her best of luck in Montana! Dr. Anthony Smith, from Charleston Southern University became the new SCAFP advisor in last spring and helped with the 2019 SuperStars competition during the SCAHPERD Conference in Myrtle Beach.  Over 60 university students battled the cold wind and rain to compete in SuperStars with students from Coastal Carolina, College of Charleston, Lander University, Limestone, SC State, and Winthrop. By a close margin, Lander students were the 2019 SuperStars Champions!

Recently, the SCAFP announced their spring workshop dates. Unfortunately, this event has been cancelled this year, due to the coronavirus pandemic.  Plans are already underway to make it bigger and better next spring. The 2021 theme will be Enhancing Fitness through Physical Education, Health, and Dance.  It will be a two day workshop held at Charleston Southern University. Presenters will include college professors, former state presidents, current state presidents, and leaders in the fields of physical education, health and dance from across the state.

As part of the conference we also plan to have a student-led, Speak Out! on Friday evening.   During the Speak Out!, students will discuss current issues with local school leaders and meet and connect with peers from universities throughout South Carolina. If you have any suggestions you would like to see included in the Speak Out, please contact me at sdparker3@csustudent.net or Dr. Smith at asmith@csuniv.edu

We are excited about all that is ahead for the SCAFP. Plans are already underway for the 2020 SuperStars at the annual conference. If you are interested in being a part of the planning and/or of  SCAFP leadership, please contact me. Looking forward to a great 2020!

Shaquasha Parker,

SCAFP President
