News from SCAPES

The 2020 SCAPES year is underway with a new board of directors, including a new president-elect, Marc Camp. I am an adapted physical education (APE) teacher in Richland School District Two. I have worked in various disciplines from health to APE over the course of the past 12 years. I came to South Carolina from Michigan to begin my teaching career in 2008 and immediately began to make a mark on physical education in the Columbia area. In my first year of teaching I worked with administration to establish the first middle level Unified physical education program in the area. I have an undeniable passion for a healthy, active lifestyle and I love sharing my passion with young people through personal relationships built while teaching and coaching. This past year I became a foster parent; I currently has 3 foster boys living with me ages 4, 10 and 11.

As the new SCAPES president, I am eager to increase the amount and quality of professional development offered to teachers. In addition to continuing to grow PEAK, I have set a goal to provide 6 webinar/video professional development opportunities during the coming year. I also want to improve the SCAPES website. Additionally I am encouraging an increased social media presence of PE teachers for the purpose of sharing the importance of what physical educators do each and every day. Many, especially new PE teachers, are using social media for personal support, help and relationships – as PE we teachers can utilize this form of communication to pull in and support each other as well. We don’t necessarily live near one another, but that isn’t a problem in this day and age. The times of feeling like an island in our schools are over if we just click the ‘post’ button.

Today I am extending the invitation to all SCAHPERD members; Each and every one of you have great ideas and are doing great things in your classes and inside your gyms. Please consider sharing your skills and your ideas with us by serving on a committee, posting or reposting on social media and by presenting at one or more of our professional developments. Just a little bit of your time will help us be the best professional organization we can be. We NEED YOU!!”
