South Carolina Physical Education Assessment Program (SCPEAP) was designed to do state level assessment of physical education programs in South Carolina. The state professional organization, the South Carolina Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance. (SCAHPERD), was contracted by the South Carolina State Department of Education (SDE) to collect data on the extent to which students in South Carolina school programs meet the state standards. These standards are described in the South Carolina Physical Education Standards, which were approved by the Board of Education.
The required assessment program was put on hold with the onset of the 2008 recession and the corresponding short falls in the state budget. SCAHPERD is working to renew the program. Teachers and schools are encouraged to use the assessment materials even though there is no requirement to submit the data to the SCDE.
SCPEAP is an organizational structure of SCAHPERD. SCPEAP’s mission is to develop appropriate assessment material for the state standards and to collect and report that data for the SDE. Physical education assessment data is program data. Individual student scores will be combined to report the number of students at each school that meet the state standards.
